What to leave out
Do not ask about the date, the venue or the budget in the card. They will be asked all three by everyone else that week.
Do not mention the ex, the length of the relationship, or that you expected it sooner. It is a card, not a review.
If one of them is new to you, write to both by name anyway. A card addressed to one half of a couple is noticed by the other half.
One card from everyone
Both families, both sets of friends. One link, and it opens on the day you choose.

What do you write in an engagement card?
Both names, one thing you like about them as a couple, and congratulations. Keep it to three sentences and make the middle one specific.
Do you write to both people or one?
Both, by name, even if you only know one of them. A card to one half of a couple is read by the other half too.
Should the card mention the wedding?
Only to say you are looking forward to it. Questions about the date, the venue and the list belong in a conversation, not in the card.
What if I do not think it is a good idea?
Then write a short, plain congratulations and nothing else. A card is not the place, and a warm short line costs you nothing.
On 22 September 2026 the UK search table gave 290 searches a month for engagement card message and 220 for the plural, and card shops ranked above any page that gave you the words.
