What To Be Fair keeps, and where.

This is a public statement, so it says the less comfortable half at the same weight as the other.

Your statements

Your statements, your photographs and your pause plan are kept by us, on Amazon Web Services in London, so that a new phone gets them back by signing in and so that your partner's phone can receive what you wrote. They are encrypted on the way to us and while they are stored, and a copy sits on each of your two phones so the app works with no signal.

We can read them. That is the plain truth of keeping something on a server, and we would rather say it than imply otherwise. Nobody at To Be Fair reads a statement except at the written request of the person who wrote it, and there is no screen, tool or report inside the company that lists them. A court order could compel us to produce them; we would tell you if the law allowed it.

What we hold about you

Your Sign in with Apple identifier, and the name and email address Apple gave us when you first signed in, including a private relay address if you chose to hide your email. Your account holds no statements itself: it is what lets a new phone find your partner and your statements again.

Each phone has an identifier and a notification token so we can send it a silent update or the one pause line you agreed with your partner in advance. We never send your partner anything you did not agree to.

What we count

Seven kinds of event, under a random identifier that is not your account and cannot be joined to it: a hearing opened, a card viewed, what you chose after, a pause line sent, a write-it-out finished, a statement deposited, and the widget shown. No text, no names, no length of anything you wrote. Crash reports carry a separate random identifier, shown to you in Settings as your Diagnostic ID, and are scrubbed of content before they leave the phone.

This website sets no cookies and runs no script. Nothing here watches you.

What stays on your phone only

What you write on the Write it out page. It is never sent anywhere, not even to your own second phone, and it is included in your PDF export because it is yours.

Deleting

Delete everything, on the Settings screen, deletes your account, every statement and photograph of yours on our servers, and everything in the app on your phone, immediately, and shows you a receipt listing each store that was cleared. Your partner keeps what is on their phone. We ask Apple to revoke your Sign in with Apple authorisation at the same time. Sign out deletes nothing.

This is not the tool. Where to get help is one tap from Settings and from every screen that could matter, and the numbers there are Refuge, Respect and Samaritans. Where to get help
