When is Mother's Day 2027? The dates, and what to write

Mother's Day 2027 is on Sunday 7 March in the UK and Ireland, and on Sunday 9 May in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The UK date moves every year because it follows Easter. Easter Sunday 2027 is 28 March, so Mothering Sunday is three weeks before it.

If your mum lives in one country and you live in another, you get two goes. Use both.

What to write in a Mother's Day card

"Happy Mother's Day, love you" is fine. She will keep it. She keeps everything. But once, write the card she reads out to her sister on the phone.

Thank her for one specific thing

Not "everything you do". One thing. The lifts to football at seven on a Saturday. Learning to text so she could ask if you had eaten. Driving across the country because you sounded odd on the phone.

Tell her something she doesn't know

Mums know what they did. They often do not know what it meant. "I still fold towels the way you do and I think of you every time" is news to her.

Examples to change

You taught me to make gravy and to leave a party before it gets sad. Both have come in very useful.

I never said thank you for driving me to every open day. I am saying it now, a bit late, with interest.

I hear your voice every time I check the gas is off. Twice.

The older I get, the more I notice how much you made look easy.

For whoever did the job

Mother's Day is not only for mums. Stepmums, grans, aunts, foster mums, the neighbour who more or less raised you: the card is for whoever did the job.

From all of you

Three siblings and one card usually means the youngest signs for everybody and writes nothing. A group card goes round as one link. Everybody writes their own line, and it opens on the day.

And the rest of the year
